I had my digital camera in my carry-on bag when I went through airport security. Afterward, the display went crazy – the screen still shows text correctly but the images on the display are nothing but purple blurs. Is there anything I can do to fix it?
The folks at the airline have assured me that the x-ray equipment couldn’t possibly have anything to do with it. Are they correct?

I put my camera (a canon 20D) through x ray machines at least 25 times in the last year without a problem. It sounds like the LCD may have been crushed (in the overhead compartment perhaps?) which would cause a problem. If you push on the edges of the LCD gently and the color changes a lot then that is probably it. It is possible to replace the LCD, but its not cheap, and only worth it if it is an expensive camera. You may be able to fix it by pulling the body apart gently to release the pressure, but it’s not too likely.
    Good Luck!

  • X-ray machines can fog photographic film, but won’t damage digital images. I suspect your camera just got bumped around a bit too much. If it’s fairly new, see if you can get it repaired under the warranty. If not, you should be able to get a repair estimate.
