I am taking a trip in late June and I am worried about my digital SLR camera getting too hot. We will be in Rome, Athens, Turkey…I know it can get very hot. What kinds of precautions can I take to keep my camera safe? Our camera backpack is black. Do I need to worry about the bag itself getting too hot with the camera inside? Any suggestions or advice are appreciated!

In a backpack, I wouldn’t worry too much about the heat. It won’t be much hotter than carrying it in your hands. How many photographers have been out shooting in the desert all day?
And I wouldn’t worry too much about the camera body anyway. I don’t think that normal levels of heat will damage it.
You do want to watch coming from a hot to a cool environment and vice versa. It can cause the lens to fog up and that can promote the growth of fungus.
It is the lenses that need to be kept out of extreme heat, like in the trunk of a car during summer. The reason is that the oils that lubricate the internal parts of the lens can melt in that kind of heat and then end up on the aperture blades causing them to stick over time.
I don’t think you have anything to worry about though just carrying the camera equipment around in a backpack or in your hands. And I don’t think that the backpack being black will make that much of a difference.
Since most other answerers have covered everything there is to know about camera and heat, i’ll give advice on dust prevention.
- When changing lenses, point the camera DOWN and away from the wind
- always change lenses as quickly as possible
- don’t bring unneccesary lens that you will only use once or twice
- bring an air blower along on your trip if dust does get on teh sensor
Don’t worry about it in those places – they are tested for way above the temperatures you will get on a day to day basis there.
Precautions are – don’t leave it in sitting in direct sunlight for any length of time especially not in a window or on the seat of a car.
Apart from that it will be fine.
Mine have been through a lot worse than being a tourist in Rome and they survived.
