I’ve heard you could put a few zip lock bags over it and it should work. Is this true? How else could I make it water proof?

This depends on what you mean by “water proof”.
Shooting in the rain or other wet environment or actually under water?
Many companies make underwater housings for different types of cameras.
The zip lock bag technique should work for rain and other liquid splashing type environments but you should go with an underwater housing for under water in a pool or lake.
check out the following website for some underwater housings.

There are companies that make underwater housings for most popular digital cameras. Some are sophisticated zip lock bags with a clear viewing port for the lens and are not only good for shooting in the rain (or beer fights), but underwater up to one meter
