I’ve gotten mixed advice so I thought I’d try yahoo answers. I have a Canon Rebel XT digital SLR camera. I’ve been outside of the country, but have never brought my dSLR with me. Now that I know more about the camera and can take photos much faster, I’d love to bring it on my trip to Bogota, Colombia. I will be staying with family there and traveling with my mom who grew up there, so I’m not another gringo tourist.
So should I bring my dSLR? If I carry it around I will keep it around my neck at all times, or should I bring a bag that is not obviously a camera bag?
Advice from people who have recently travelled to that area would be much appreciated.

Ï’ve gone there about 7 times, and as long as you don’t flaunt it you should be fine. You should probably put it in a bag. If you’re only going to Bogota you should be fine, it’s not like you’re going out to the countryside where it would be sketchy to bring it. The fact that you’re not a ‘gringo tourist’ helps a lot because I would say that people would be more prone to steal your things if you were an obvious tourist.
Have fun! Make sure to visit la plaza de bolivar and the gold museum.
I have close friends who are from Colombia. My advice: don’t take it.
If you must have a camera, bring a few disposables. And, if a thief demands the camera, hand it over immediately. I assume that you are not Rambo or G. Gordon Liddy.
Don’t be conspicuous; don’t flaunt being “bucks up”.
Muggings, robberies, and kidnappings are frequent in that beautiful country.
I’d say No because it could get lost or stolen, but as long as you get insurance then you’ll be fine i guess (as long as electronics are included)
Im going travelling for a year and Im leaving my Nikon SLR at home, even though i love taking pics, im taking a cheaper one instead.
